Donald D. Cooper, Sr.
July 17, 1944 - April 9, 2017

Donald Dean Cooper, Sr., was born on July 17, 1944, in Osage, Iowa, to Howard and Eliza (Robson). He grew up in Manly, graduating from Manly High School in 1962. He, then, served in the United States Army from 1962 to 1965 while stationed in Korea. Later, he served in the National Guard out of Albert Lea, Minnesota, from 1980 to 1985.

Don met Virginia Ratliff in Alexandra, Virginia. They married on March 6, 1965, in Clintwood, Virginia. After living in Georgia, they moved back to Iowa in 1965. Don and Virginia, then, lived in Hanlontown while he worked at Winnebago. Next, they moved to the Lake Mills area where he worked at Fleetguard for nineteen years. Eventually, however, they made their home in Rake. For six years, Dan owned and operated Cooper's Repair in Rake. In addition, for over ten years, he served with the Rake Volunteer Fire Department.

Although a mechanic by training, he became a jack of all trades. An avid NASCAR fan, he was, always, cheering for Dale Earnhardt. Surrounded by his family, he enjoyed camping every weekend. He, also, liked going to the casino, mudding with his kids, and riding snowmobiles. In addition, he loved teasing and playing with all his grandchildren, having given each a "special" nickname from grandpa.

Baptized on August 6, 2012, Donald D. Cooper, proudly, joined the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center. He died on Sunday, April 9, 2017, at his home in Rake. He was 72.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia, of Rake; his four children, Donald Cooper, Jr., and his wife, Linda, of Joice, Deena Paul (Charlie Braman), of Buffalo Center, Dawn Jensvold, and her husband, William, of Buffalo Center, and Duane, and his wife, Teresa, of Buffalo Center; his twenty-nine grandchildren, Donald Brandon (Kallie), Tyler (Ashley), Steven (Taylor), Nickolas (Aimee), Nathan (Abigail), Emily, Kyeisha, Elijah, Isaac, Aliyah, Erin (Travis Tweeten), Ashley (Zach) Pilot, Tiarra, Rebekah, Mackenzy, William, Tabetha, McKhayla, Isaac, Dalton, Caleb, and Brody; several great-grandchildren, Owen and Gavin, Hunter, Jason and Ellie, Autumn and Nora, Elsa, Jazmyn, and Deagyn; three brothers and two sisters: Howie (Dee) Cooper, of Mason City, Twila Kroneman, of Osage, Merrill (Roberta) Cooper, of Mason City, Mary (Maynard) Albers, of Owatonna, Minnesota, and Chuck (Jan) Cooper, of Albert Lea, Minnesota; and two extended family members, Bryan Paul and Tom Cox; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents, an infant sister, Wava Jean; a brother, Walter; a sister-in-law, Valoyce Cooper; a sister, Dorothy; and a brother-in-law, George Kroneman.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 6:00 PM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 201 4th Street NE, Buffalo Center, with Pastor Nathaniel Hedin Schmidt officiating. A military service will, also, be conducted at the church on Wednesday. Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM, Wednesday, at the church and continue until the time of the service. A private family inurnment will take place at West Cemetery, Rake, at a later date.
