Eileen LaVonne Larson, 89, of Thompson, died on Tuesday, February 28, 2017, at the Hancock County Hospital.

Eileen LaVonne Larson, a daughter of John and Maysil (Rydson) Gahan, was born in Britt, Iowa, on June 24, 1927. In 1944, she won the Spelling Bee and graduated from Forest City High School. Then, with some girlfriends, she moved to Albert Lea, Minnesota, where they all found office jobs. While traveling back to the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, she met a witty young man, Carroll “Bud” Larson. They married on September 15, 1946, in Mason City. Subsequently, they settled on a farm outside Thompson, Iowa, and raised three children. Eileen supported her husband and always wanted the best for their children. On the weekends, they would go into town to sell eggs, cream, or milk, buy some groceries, and then treat themselves to ice cream.

Never afraid to speak her mind, Eileen enjoyed her morning coffee social with her friends. She, also, liked playing cards and telling about her time as a young girl in the family’s Apple orchard. She treasured her family and would always remind her children to stay in touch.

Eileen is survived by her children, Dave Larson, of Phoenix, Arizona, Carolyn (Brian) Cassidy, of Three Forks, Montana, and Dan Larson, fiancée, Kelly Pederson, and her children, Alexys, Olivia, and Benjamin Pederson, of Thompson; her grandchildren, Robin (Laramie) Heuser, of Ames, Jeremy (Mandy Mikes) and Travis (Krista) Tegland, all of Forest City, and Alannah and Reece Larson, of Thompson; her great-grandchildren: Ryker, Liam, Brodan, Barrett and Bria; her brother, Don Gahan, of Garner; and her sisters, Norma (Connie) Burgardt, of Britt, and Geraldine Hansmeier, of Crystal Lake, as well as by many other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carroll “Bud” Larson; her granddaughter, Sydney Larson, and a brother-in-law, Calvin Hansmeier.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 3, 2017, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, Iowa, with Pastor Judy Wozniak officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, 2017, also at the church. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family.
