Ruth M. Johnson, 88, of Lake Mills, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

A daughter of George and Hilma (Thompson) Kilen, Ruth Margaret Johnson was born on October 3, 1928, in rural Lake Mills, Iowa. After graduating from Lake Mills High School in 1946, she attended Luther Teachers College. On June 27, 1948, she married Andrew Palmer Johnson at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. She taught country school for a while, and then stopped to raise her six children. Later, she worked at the Winnebago County Home in rural Lake Mills for several years as the Activity Director in which capacity she headed many ceramic projects.

Ruth loved her family very much. She had a passion for quilting and making layettes for school children. A wonderful cook and baker, she specialized in lefsa. Meticulous about gardening as well, she took particular care of all her flower bulbs, that her family had had for years.

Her memory is cherished by her children, Kathy Millett, of Waterloo, Iowa, Jean (Dr. Steven) Burns, of Sac City, Iowa, Mary Kruse, of Mason City, Iowa, Linda (Alan) Wharton, of Latimer, Iowa, and Curtis Johnson, of Lake Mills, Iowa; her sister, Hilma (Loren) Stover, of Bluff Springs, Illinois; her sisters-in-law, Joyce Kilen, Shirley Tveit, and Marilyn Johnson, all of Lake Mills, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Ruth was preceded in death by parents, her husband, Andrew, in 2012; her son, Steven; her grandson, Todd Burns; her great-granddaughter, Abbie Wharton; her son-in-law, Ron Millett; her brother, Gordon Kilen; and her sisters Alice Kingland, Doris Bjorklund, and Grace Beiser.

Funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM, Saturday, February 25, 2017, at the Winnebago Lutheran Church, 40029 – 210th Avenue, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, with Pastor Bill Peters officiating.
