Bertha Evelyn Irons
December 27, 1922 - March 06, 2017

Bertha Irons, age 94, passed away on Monday, March 6, 2017, with her family by her side at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center, Iowa.

Bertha Evelyn (Badje) Irons, a daughter of John and Lena (Johnson) Badje, was born on December 27, 1922, at the family home. She attended country school in rural Rake. As a young woman, while working for the Reinard and Dora Johnson family, she met her future husband, Hjalmer, who was also employed there. On February 18, 1941, Hjalmer and Bertha married at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake. They purchased a farm near Rake where they raised their five children, eventually sharing in the farming operation with their three sons until Hjalmer and Bertha retired.

Bertha enjoyed her flowers and keeping her yard in pristine condition. A wonderful cook, she loved canning many vegetables and keeping her freezer full of baked goods. Bertha played her accordion for the enjoyment of others. Bertha’s reputation as a good cook enticed many sales people to arrange their visits around noon. Bertha always cooked a little extra and welcomed any unexpected visitors to join them at mealtime. Her grandchildren, however, were her pride and joy. None of them left Grandma’s house without going to the candy drawer for a treat.

A life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church, Bertha played a very active role the church throughout her life. Moreover, as a resident of the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center for several years, she came to see the staff and other residents as her extended family.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Linda (Robert) Hofmann, of Titonka, Eugene (Sharon) Irons, of Buffalo Center, and John (Karen) Irons, of Rake; twelve grandchildren; as well as many great- and great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Carl Badje, of Blue Earth, Minnesota, and Joe (Mary) Badje, of Rake; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Irons, of Buffalo Center; and a sister-in-law, Arelly Badje, of Albert Lea, Minnesota; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hjalmer; two sons, Jerry and Gary Irons; an infant daughter; two brothers, Lawrence and John; two sisters, Jennie and Josie; and her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Janice Badje, Dorothy Badje, Bill Mayland, and Evert Swalve.

Jerry’s wife, Dianna Ostermann, and her husband, Wayne, and children remained a special part of Bertha and Hjalmer’s lives. Her true love for family and friends will remain in our family’s hearts forever.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake, Iowa, with Pastor J. Douglas Rokke officiating. Visitation will be for one hour before the service at the church. Burial will take place in West Cemetery in Rake. The Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street in Lake Mills is overseeing the arrangements.
