Genevieve Josephine Dearing
February 17, 1920 - March 01, 2017

Genevieve Josephine (Ites) Dearing, 97, of Buffalo Center, Iowa, died on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, quietly at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Genevieve Ites was born to Ralph and Minnie (Greenfield) Ites on February 17, 1920, on a farm west of Buffalo Center in Kossuth County. She attended Buffalo Center High School, graduating in 1937. Next, she taught rural county school for three years near Woden at Bingham Township No. 4.

On May 16, 1942, Gen married Marvin Dearing. Together, they lived and farmed between Rake and Buffalo Center. The stereotypical farm wife, she, always, had the meals and lunch ready. Moreover, she would work right along with Marvin whether in the field or with livestock. For an added financial boost, Gen would, often, work the seasonal corn pack at Green Giant in Blue Earth or, at times, at Deluxe, a filter factory in Lake Mills. A member of the Buffalo Center United Methodist Church since 1943, Gen served in various positions.

In 1981, Gen and Marvin moved off the farm to a house in Buffalo Center. Then, they, also, purchased a building in downtown Buffalo Center with the purpose of renovating it as a Senior Citizen Center. A few years later, they sold it to the city. Gen served as president of the Center from 1981 to 2012, at which time she entered the nursing home.

Never able to have children of her own, Gen always considered Joy, her twelve years younger sister, and her five children as her own. During the summer, with Joy working at Deluxe in Lake Mills, they would take the kids, Harlan, Dennis, Larry, Jeanie, and Mark, out of the “city” to the farm. Indeed, Mark, the youngest, moved in with Gen and Marvin through his middle and high school years after Joy died. Joy's grandchildren and great grandchildren, even, called Gen “grandma.”

Her memory is cherished by “her children,” Dennis (Sandy) Aukes, of Onalaska, Wisconsin, Larry (Debra) Aukes, of Buffalo Center, Iowa, Jeanie (Brad) Grotewold, of Lake Mills, Iowa, and Mark Aukes, of Forest City, Iowa; Harlan's surviving wife, Sarah Aukes, of Buffalo Center, Iowa; and all her grandchildren and great grandchildren that gave her such joy; as well as by many extended family members.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Marvin; her parents, Ralph and Minnie Ites; her brother, Leon Ites, and his wife, Virginia; her sister, Inez Joy Aukes, and her husband, Merle; her nephews, Roy Aukes (infant), Harlan Aukes, and William Ites; and her niece, McKayla Aukes (9 yr.)

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, March 6, 2017, at the United Methodist Church, 215 1st St NW, Buffalo Center, with Pastor Debra Devine officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery in Buffalo Center. Visitation for Gen will be from 9:00 AM until service time at the church on Monday.
