Curtis L. Evans
October 19, 1946 - October 27, 2016

Curtis L. Evans, 70, of Joice, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2016, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Curtis Lloyd Evans was born on the family farm near Joice, Iowa, on October 19, 1946, to Lloyd and Charlotte (Homes) Evans. The youngest of four children, including his sisters, Charlene, Loretta, and Janet, he attended elementary school in Joice and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1964. In 1966, he graduated from NIACC. On July 12, 1969, he married Suzanne Milder of Olin. To their union, six children were born: Thaddeus, Christopher, Catherine, Emily, Lucas, and Rachel. He treasured the members of his family, considering them his greatest accomplishment. Farming the land, he produced corn, soybeans, raspberries, pumpkins, and the best sweet corn in northern Iowa.

Curt was known for his gentle and humble spirit, quick wit, and great sense of humor. Only rarely did anyone not like him. A passionate, thoughtful man of high character, he was always good for a conversation and a laugh. He enjoyed vacations to the Black Hills and felt proud to have visited every state in the nation. He enjoyed a wide range of interests including sports, politics, playing cards, genealogy, meteorology, and furniture restoration. A steward of the land, he advocated for conservation and protecting the environment.

His life serves as a testament to his generous spirit as well as the generous spirit of others. He received a kidney transplant from his sister-in-law, Marge Johnson, in December of 1995. With his new kidney, he was able to live an additional seventeen years, the best seventeen years of his life in his estimation. During that time, he was able to see six high school graduations, seven college/graduate school graduations, five weddings, and the births of seven grandchildren.

He used his many colloquialisms to provoke thought and instill wisdom. He firmly believed, for example, that ANY JOB WORTH DOING IS WORTH DOING WELL. He has now left us in life, and he DID his JOB as a farmer and as a family man with WORTH and DID it VERY WELL. We will miss him tremendously. His life, however, will live on in the seeds that he sowed, the people whose lives he touched, the children he raised, and the wife he loved.

Curt is survived by Suzanne (Milder) Evans, his wife of forty-seven years; his six children: Thaddeus (Christine) Evans, Christopher (Joy) Evans, Catherine (Steven) Sand, Emily (Michael) Murphy, Lucas (Summer) Evans, and Rachel Evans; seven grandchildren: Becca, Charlotte, and Mary Evans; Andrew and Ethan Murphy; and Connor and Lea Sand; two sisters: Charlene (Gene) Ostmo and Loretta (Larry) Dorhout; and a special sister-in-law, Marge (Larry) Johnson as well as by many nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Charlotte Evans; his parents-in-laws, Ralph and Bertha Milder; and by a sister, Janet (Evans) Gallagher.

Memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, October 31, 2016, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 406 S Grant Street, Lake Mills, Iowa, 50450, with Father Jim Dubert officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, Sunday, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa, with a Vigil Service at 5:00 PM. Inurnment will follow at Concordia Cemetery in rural Joice.
