Paul Elmer Dahle
July 27, 1929 - August 03, 2016On August 3, 2016, the Lord called home Paul Dahle, formerly of south Emmons, Minnesota, and Lake Mills, Iowa.
Paul Elmer Dahle was born on July 27, 1929, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to Elmer and Margaret (Tveite) Dahle. He grew up on the family farm south of Emmons, attended Lime Creek Lutheran School, and graduated from Emmons High School in 1946. Next, he earned a degree in Industrial Arts from Mankato State Teachers College and went on to teach in a one-room school in North Dakota. After serving in the National Guard, he enlisted as an airman in the United States Air Force in December of 1950. Following Officer Candidate School at Lackland Air Base in Texas, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant and began training in language and radar interception. While in Houston, he met Sarah Margarette Singleton and began a whirlwind courtship, marrying her seven weeks later in Margarette’s hometown, Senecaville, Ohio, on September 5, 1953.
Stationed in various locations including Cape Cod, Iceland, Maine, Fargo, North Dakota, Ohio, and the Philippines, Paul went on to serve for twenty years in the USAF. While stationed in California, they added a daughter, Laura, and son, Joseph, to the family.
During his military career, Paul worked as a navigator on C-130, C-97, and F-89 aircraft, taught at the University of Cincinnati, briefed the general at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, and survived a thirteen-month combat tour in Vietnam, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. In addition, he earned a Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon and a Meritorious Service Award. Moreover, while in the military, he completed a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Education. After retiring from the Air Force as a Major, he taught Jr. ROTC at Midview High School in Grafton, Ohio. In 1975, he moved his family to Lake Mills where he served as a high school guidance counselor for many years.
Paul enjoyed many activities including playing golf, bridge, and poker, gardening, and spending time with his grandchildren. Active in his local church throughout his life, he served in various capacities. His faith central to his life, he trusted in Jesus as his Savior and Lord.
Paul is survived by his daughter Laura (Jerry) Loving, of Walnut Creek, California; his son, Joe Dahle, of Deltona, Florida; four grandchildren, Winter Rose Saeedi and Joshua, Tyler, and Alex Dahle; and a sister, Alice Naumann, of Puyallup, Washington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Margaret Dahle; and his beloved wife, Margarette Dahle.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, August 20, 2016, at the Lime Creek Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, with Rev. Dan Basel officiating. Burial will follow in the Lime Creek Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery with military honors conducted by the American Legion Louis/Tveite Post #317 of Emmons, Minnesota. Visitation will take place on Friday, August 19, 2016, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
