Gladys Norene Almelien
September 26, 1911 - December 13, 2015

Gladys Almelien, age 104, 2 months, and 17 days, of Joice, Iowa, entered her heavenly home on Sunday, December 13, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society in Forest City, Iowa.

Gladys Norene Fjeld Almelien was born on the family farm by Fertile, Iowa, on September 26, 1911, to Martin O. and Ida (Finsaas) Fjeld. She attended country school and later graduated from Fertile High School with the Class of 1930. She, then, attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI). After earning her teaching certificate, she taught at various country schools in Worth, Winnebago, and Cerro Gordo Counties. Later, she was employed at Deluxe (Fleetgaard) in Lake Mills as an inspector.

On June 5, 1941, Gladys married Reuben E. Almelien. Together, they farmed near Joice, Iowa, for many years. In due course, they had two children, Sandra Rae and Gary Lee.

Gladys is survived by her daughter Sandra (Bill) Price; her daughter-in-law, Paulette Almelien; her grandchildren, Brad (Jodie) Almelien; Jamie (Rhett) Fox-Clayton; Joy, Terry (Stephanie), and Tim Fox; and Amy (Jamie) Hagen; and her great-grandchildren: Albert Ady; Ryan and Allison Almelien; Jack and Ruby Clayton; Sidney, Sam, and Sadie Fox; and Kevin and Sophia Hagen; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Reuben, in 1989; her son, Gary, in 1995; her parents; her sisters, Bernice Tweed, Evelyn Kingland, Mildred Slattum, Antoinette Brodigan, and Palma Johnson; and her brother, Marlin Fjeld.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, December 18, 2015, at Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church south of Joice, Iowa, with Pastor Kevin Olson officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursday evening, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, and again one hour prior to the service at the church. Her remains will be cremated after the funeral service and inurnment will take place at a later date at the Elim Cemetery near Fertile, Iowa.

Her family suggests that memorials be made to Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church, 3906 Bluebill Avenue, Joice, Iowa 50446.
