April 7, 1932 - October 3, 2015Surrounded by her loving husband of sixty-five years, Robert, and family, Delpha Joan Mattison, age 83, died peacefully on Saturday, October 3, 2015, at Sanford Medical Center.
Born on April 7, 1932, on a farm near Woden, Iowa, to Lester A. and Edna O. Holland, Delpha attended a one room school in Thompson, Iowa.
After graduating, Delpha married her high school sweetheart, Robert Mattison. During their sixty-five year marriage, they lived first in Minneapolis before moving to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1959.
Delpha earned a B.A. in Biology and Earth Sciences from Augustana College, graduating summa cum laude in 1970. For twenty years, she was employed at Zip Feeds as a nutrition secretary.
An active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Delpha taught Sunday school and served as President of the South Dakota Synodical Women of the ELCA and on the Board of Senior Ministries. A tireless advocate for those in need, she participated in Bread for the World as well.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; her sisters, Rhoda Jutting and Mary Lou Lawson; her children, Dan (Cathi), Faye, and Lee Ann (Glen) Mattison; and Kristi (Bill) Schmidley; five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 6, 2015, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. Memorial Contributions may be made to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in memory of Delpha Mattison or to the Augustana College Fund.
