Grayce Marie Kooiman
November 26, 1926 - January 14, 2015Grayce Marie (Zwaan) Kooiman, 88, of Forest City, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.
A daughter of Ralph and Marie (Lems) Zwaan, Grayce was born in Doon, Iowa, on November 26, 1926. She grew up in Doon and graduated from the Christian School there. Known as the “rough and tumble” Grayce, she played basketball while in high school.
After completing high school, Grayce attended Westmar College in Lemars, Iowa, to become a teacher. She taught at a country school in Sioux county for a year and a half. Then, she took a few years off from teaching to marry Cornie Kooiman and to raise their children as a stay at home mom in Rock Valley, Iowa. Grayce and Cornie, later, divorced. In 1958, Grayce moved her family to Forest City and went back to college. Returning to teaching in 1967, she taught in the Forest City school system for twenty-seven years. After retiring, she spent a few years traveling and lots of time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Grayce is survived by her children, Ron and Audrey Kooiman and Carla Stevenson, all of Forest City, and Darcia (Monty) Schlawin, of Garner; her grandchildren, Shannon Thill, Cara Fosselman, Tina (Damien) Perry, Cory (Jackie) and Jeff Stevenson, and Michelle (John) Frasier; and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Leonard; her sister, Henrietta; and an infant son, Daniel Marshall Kooiman.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 17, 2015, at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark St., Forest City. Interment will take place Monday, January 19, 2015, in Rock Valley, Iowa. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be directed to the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.
