February 21, 1933 – November 6, 2014

FOREST CITY - Wayland R. Blake, 81, of Forest City, died on Thursday, November 6, 2014, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Wayland was born on February 21, 1933, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, a son of Bruce and Bessie (Roberts) Blake. An Iowa high school wrestling champion in 1951, he went on to compete at Iowa State University. In 1951, he graduated from Eagle Grove High School. In 1953, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving most of his duty in Germany. After his discharge, he attended Mankato State College. There, he joined the wrestling team and competed in the NCAA championship in Maryland before graduating.

On June 14, 1959, Wayland married Dolores Lewis at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Webster City, Iowa. To this union, three daughters were born: Shelly, Maria, and Alyssa. After working as a territory manager and merchandiser for Skelly and Sun Oil companies, he established Forest City Firestone in 1969 and worked as owner-manager for many years. Later in his career, he drove motor homes and semi-trailers for Winnebago Industries before retiring in 1995.

Throughout his life, Wayland continued to enjoy following sports of all kinds, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. Horses, also, played a big role of Wayland’s life. Indeed, he had a lifetime membership in the American Quarter Horse Association. A volunteer in the Forest City Fire Department, he, also, served as a member of the Forest City City Council. He was a member of the Forest City United Methodist Church.

Wayland treasured his family. Survivors include his wife, Dolores; his daughters, Shelly (Kent) Schlawin, of Johnston, Maria (Steve) Hanson, of St. Johns, Florida, and Alyssa (Chris) Blake Callaway, of Clear Lake; five grandchildren: Blake and Blaine Schlawin, Abby and Jenny Hanson, and Lewis Callaway; a sister, Alice (Lynn) Twedt, of Clear Lake; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Kritchman, of Urbandale; as well as a niece and several nephews.

Wayland was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, November 15, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Forest City with Rev. Charles Layton officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove at a later date. A gathering of family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Forest City United Methodist Church or Forest City Area Emergency Services.
