Vernon H. Gudmonson was born on February 10, 1924, in Mt. Valley Township, Winnebago County, Iowa, a son of Oliver and Ella (Holtan) Gudmonson. Baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church, he attended country school.
On May 30, 1948, Vernon married Betty Jean Loge at the First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, Minnesota. The couple made their home in rural Scarville where they farmed. For a number of years, they also sold Watkins products. They enjoyed going to neighborhood picnics, dancing, and attending the Iowa State Fair.
Proud of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Vernon and Betty attended as many of their sporting and FFA activities as they could while the grandchildren were growing up. In later years, the couple kept up to date on the happenings in Lake Mills through the window of their car on Main Street or by what they heard at the Grand Café.
A devoted husband, Vernon tended to Betty’s every need, especially during the last forty years, helping tirelessly and patiently. After Betty passed away on January 15, 2011, Vernon had been looking forward to seeing her again ever since. “How he really must have loved her!”
