June 18, 1915 - November 11, 2005Forest City -- Loyd E. Handeland, age 90, of Forest City, died on Friday, November 11, 2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Loyd Elmer Handeland was born in Estherville, Iowa, on June 18, 1915, the youngest son of Lars and Ellen Josefine (Endresen) Handeland. Having received his education in Estherville, he graduated from Estherville High School.
Loyd married Vivian Irene Espeset at the Estherville Lutheran Church on June 18, 1938. He worked in various jobs in Estherville, beginning in a grocery store. Later, he was employed by Gambles Stores, then by Gardston Hotel as maintenance engineer, and later by the Sandin Funeral Home. For several years, he was district manager for Moorman Feeds.
In 1950 Loyd and Vivian purchased a general store in Gruver, Iowa, which they operated for some thirteen years. In 1963, they moved to Forest City where Loyd was employed by Waldorf College in several capacities until he retired. Later, he worked for an electrical contractor, servicing heating controls in various public buildings in the Forest City area.
A member of Pilot Knob Lutheran Church, Loyd lived as a Christian all of his life. Indeed, during his later life, he served as lay a pastor for many congregations, and his witness to Jesus, his Savior, lives on in many, many hearts. An accomplished organist, Loyd also enjoyed woodworking and fishing, and he treasured time spent visiting with family and friends.
Loyd is survived by his children: Larry Handeland, and his wife, Kathy, of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, and Karen Yoshihara, of Lafayette, Colorado; his grandson, Jerome Krough, of Hanover, Pennsylvania; his granddaughters, Kristin Ashton, and her husband, Mark, of Lafayette, Colorado, and Kimberly Fitzgerald, and her husband, Ryan, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and two great-grandchildren, Julie Banning, and her husband, Mat, of Monroe, North Carolina, and Jason Krough, of Lafayette, Colorado.
Loyd was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Vivian, on December 6, 1996; an infant son, Jerome Eugene Handeland; and five brothers and five sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 18, 2005, at 10:00 AM at Pilot Knob Lutheran Church in rural Forest City with Pastor Robert Snitzer officiating and on Friday, November 18, 2005, at 2:30 PM at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville, Iowa. Burial will be at Estherville Lutheran Cemetery in Estherville. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 17, 2005, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home and an hour prior to services at the church.
