John LeRoy Evjen
(May 4, 1932 - August 21, 2013)

John LeRoy Evjen, 81, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

The youngest of nine children, John LeRoy Evjen was born on May 4, 1932, in Troy, South Dakota, to John and Agnes (Osterkil) Evjen. He was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran church in Troy. After attending school and working on the family farm, he headed west, ending up in Seattle, Washington. Working for Boeing Industries, he helped build the first B-52 bomber off the assembly line as well as other planes. He, then, returned to Watertown, South Dakota.

On August 4, 1956, John married Joyce Marie Nelson. They moved to Lake Mills, Iowa, where John began working at Cool Springs. Then, he went to work at Weyerhaeuser Industries in Albert Lea, Minnesota, where he worked for over twenty-five years. After Weyerhaeuser closed, he worked at Fleetguard in Lake Mills until he retired.

Once retired, John and Joyce became frequent long distance travelers spending time with their daughter and her family in California and their son and his family in South Texas. Eventually, the two wintered at Lake Corpus Christi, Texas, until Joyce’s passing in 2011.

From his boyhood, John loved to hunt and especially fish. Not a catch-and-release kind of guy, he loved good fish. He also enjoyed bowling, having earned the nickname Johnny Ebonite while participating in a league for several years. He also loved watching the Vikings and the Twins, except when they were losing.

A lifetime member of Salem Lutheran Church, John also belonged to the Lake Mills Senior Citizens Club for many years.

He is survived by his son, Jim (Rose) Evjen, of Portland, Texas; his son-in-law, Tom Ramthun, of Lake Mills, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jennifer Ramthun, of Ames, Iowa, and Taniesha and Dakota Evjen, both of Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Vivian Larson, of Watertown, South Dakota; six sisters-in-law: Joyce Evjen, of Strandburg, South Dakota, Marilyn Evjen, of Stockholm, South Dakota, Delores Roberts and Donna Miller, of Watertown, South Dakota, Barbara (Dennis) Meseberg, of Ontario, California, and Dorothy Barck, of Marshall, Minnesota; and a brother-in-law, Jerry (Deb) Nelson, of Lawrence, Kansas; as well as by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins and their families.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joyce; his daughter, Janice Ramthun; his grandson, Matthew Ramthun; three brothers, Ray, Lloyd, and Loyal; and four sisters, Adelle, Helen, Ruth, and Nordis.

Memorial service will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 31, 2013, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa, with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Inurnment will take at a later date at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Troy, South Dakota.
