January 3, 1934 - February 1, 2005LAKE MILLS — Richard D. Sletten, 71, of Lake Mills, died on Tuesday, February, 1, 2005, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.
Richard Dean Sletten was born on January 3, 1934, in rural Freeborn County, Minnesota, to Albert and Alma (Nelson) Sletten.
Following the death of his mother in 1935, Richard was cared for by various family members. At age 3, he came to live with his uncle and aunt, Pearlin and Ella Pederson.
Baptized at home and confirmed at North Prairie Lutheran Church, Richard attended country school and public school in Scarville, Leland, and Lake Mills, graduating with the class of 1952.
On June 12, 1955, Richard married Arlene Schultz at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton, Iowa. They made their home in rural Leland, Iowa, where Richard farmed for a number of years.
In August 1979, they moved into Lake Mills. Richard worked first for Land O' Lakes in Albert Lea, Minnesota, and then for Winnebago Industries in Forest City before retiring.
Richard truly enjoyed watching sports, especially football and Chicago Cubs baseball. He also thrived on the friendships he had with his coffee buddies at Hardee's in Forest City.
Survivors include his children, Clyde, James, and his wife, Dagmar, Neal, and his wife, Gaye, and Roy Sletten, and his wife, Becky, all of Lake Mills, and Diane Sletten, of Worthington, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, Adrienne Skilbred, of Ames, Ryan Sletten, of Cedar Falls, Kristin Sletten, also of Cedar Falls, Nathan Sletten, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Nicole Sletten, of Lake Mills, Melody Eggerth, and her husband, Andrew, of Lake Mills, and Heather Price, of Mason City; three great-grandchildren, Alex, Ariana, and Bladen; two brothers, Kenneth Sletten, and his wife, Iva, of Clarks Grove, Minnesota, and Arnold Sletten, and his wife, Elaine, of Brownsdale, Minnesota; a sister, Helen Raveill, of Chatfield, Minnesota; his brothers-in-law, Dale and Allen Schultz, of Kensett; and his sisters-in-law, Ann Sletten, of Albert Lea, Minnesota., and Doris Davis, and her husband, Robert, of Nashua; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Arlene, in 1989; an infant daughter, Joy; his brothers, Donald, Earl, and his wife, Viv, and Henry Sletten; a sister, Violet Haugen, and her husband, Marvin; and a brother-in-law, Russel Schultz.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 7, 2005, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville with the Rev. Randy Baldwin officiating. Burial will take place at North Prairie Lutheran Cemetery in rural Leland. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, February 6, 2005, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main St., Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the North Prairie Cemetery Corporation.
