Bernice T. Peterson
(November 8, 1908 - August 26, 2011)Bernice T. Peterson, age 102, of Lake Mills, died Friday, August 26, 2011, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.
Bernice Thermensa (Swenson) Peterson was born on November 8, 1908, in Winnebago County, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Clara (Moen) Swenson. She attended country school and graduated from Forest City High School. Bernice was baptized and confirmed at West Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Leland, Iowa.
Bernice married Vernon Peterson. The couple made their home on a farm south of Lake Mills. Bernice was a partner with Vernon, helping and working hard on the farm, gardening, canning, and tending to the animals. The couple moved into Lake Mills in 1967 where Bernice worked at the phone company, Infelt’s Variety Store, the Cool Springs Canning Company, and Deluxe Products, retiring at age sixty-two.
Bernice and Vernon loved to dance and attended the Surf Ballroom every Friday night. Faith also played an important role in Bernice’s life. An active member of the Salem Lutheran Church, she joined the Ladies Aid Society and WELCA. Highly skilled at handiwork, Bernice enjoyed tatting, embroidering, hardanger embroidering, quilting, sewing, knitting, and crocheting. She became a resident of the Lake Mills Care Center in 2007.
Survivors include her three daughters, Verna Helgeson, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Joan (Ronald) Hall, of Rochester, Minnesota, and Mary (David) Dakken, of Forest City, Iowa; her grandchildren, Kurtis (Ricki Lynn) Helgeson, of Pennsylvania, Bruce (Connie) Helgeson, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Gary (Linda) Helgeson, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Judy (Steve) Eidness, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Julie (Charlie) McCoy, of Rochester, Minnesota, Daniel Hall, of Woodbury, Minnesota, Michael Hall, of Gibbon, Minnesota, Rhonda (Tim) Clark, of Ventura, Iowa, Todd (Kim) Dakken, of Forest City, Iowa, and Tim (Kim) Dakken, of Forest City, Iowa; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Faye Waite, of Portland, Oregon, Joy Isebrand, of Titonka, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernon; a daughter and son-in-law, Delores (Elwood) Porter; a son-in-law, Kurtis Helgeson; two grandchildren, Paul Helgeson and Ann Marie Porter; a brother, Harlan Swenson; and a sister in infancy.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, August 31, 2011, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating. Burial will be in the Salem Memorial Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
