(August 12, 1926 - September 3, 2011)Gordon H. “Gordy” Kilen, 85, of Lake Mills, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 3, 2011, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa, surrounded by many members of his loving family.
Gordon Hilman Kilen was born on August 12, 1926, at the family farm in rural Lake Mills, Iowa, to George and Hilma (Thompson) Kilen. He attended and graduated from Lake Mills High School.
On June 17, 1949, Gordy married Joyce Madson in St. Paul, Minnesota, a marriage which listed for sixty-two years.
A life-long farmer until he retired in 2007 and sold the family farm, Gordy and Joyce, then, moved to Mills Harbor. Besides farming, Gordy also sold and serviced grain storage bins for North Iowa Grain of Garner for many years.
Gordy loved bowling, fishing, and golf. In addition, he managed the Salem church-league softball team for many years. He was an active member of the International Order of Odd Fellows for decades and a longtime member of the Winnebago County Fair Board.
Gordy was known for his willingness to offer a ride or a helping hand to anyone for the dedication to County Cousins he shared with Joyce and for his sociability.
Gordy is survived by his wife, Joyce, of Lake Mills; his four sons: Glenn Kilen (Darlene), of Rochester, Minnesota, John Kilen of Lake Mills, Jim Dietz-Kilen (Catherine), of Des Moines, Iowa, and Dan Kilen (Kathy), of Eldridge, Iowa; nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren; his sisters Ruth and Hilma; along with many extended relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Grace, Alice, and Doris.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor David E. Jordan presiding, interment to follow at Salem Lutheran Cemetery in Lake Mills, Iowa.
Visitation will be Tuesday evening, September 6, 2011, from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450.
