Dean Robert Syverson, 59, of Lawrence, Kansas, formerly of Lake Mills, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at his home.

Dean Robert was born on September 28, 1951, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Clifford and Dorothy (Hankner) Syverson.

His parents moved back to Lake Mills, Iowa, shortly thereafter where he lived until he graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1970.

Dean shared a love of music with his brother, Mark, and took his place in the Alphameric Underground Band in 1967 when Mark left to enter college. Dean played bass and sang lead and background vocals in bands until he left to enter the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. He graduated in 1975, with a bachelor’s degree in Germanic Languages and Literatures.

Dean and Mark formed a band, Windfall, in 1976 and toured professionally for three years. Dean then returned to Lawrence where was employed in the University of Kansas Bookstore. He helped Mark found the Kansas Film Institute, serving as Vice President from 1984 to 1991. Dean was a founding officer in both Magic Visions (1987) and in 21st Century Sound and Vision, Inc. although he never was actively employed in either corporate entity. Vision problems forced Dean to retire early, but he acted as property manager for a farm in southern Minnesota from 2005 until it was sold this past year.

He is survived by his uncle, Leslie (Art) Syverson, Fergus Falls, Minnesota, and several cousins.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents. His brother, Mark, died December 25, 2010.

A memorial service will at 1:30 PM, Saturday, June 11, 2011, at the Asbury United Methodist Church with Pastor Wendi Gillan officiating.

Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Inurnment will take place at Sunnyside Cemetery in Lake Mills, Iowa.
