Jack Glenn Smithe
(August 9, 1931 - May 25, 2011)Jack G. Smithe, age 79, of Lake Mills, died Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.
Jack Glenn Smithe was born on August 9, 1931, in Benton, Wisconsin, the son of Sherman and Mildred (Stevens) Smith.
After attending public school in Benton, Jack entered the Army at age seventeen.
On January 8, 1956, he married Beverly Tweed at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa.
Jack made a career of his military service and retired from the United States Army on October 31, 1968. While serving our country, Jack was stationed in Germany, France, Vietnam, Korea and various other places in the United States. While in Germany, he became a Master Mason.
A very athletic guy and a sports fanatic, Jack enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, playing golf, and bowling. He enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening. He loved his family and cherished time spent with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Beverly of Lake Mills, Iowa; his son, Dennis (Cindy Bancroft) Smithe, of Waverly, Iowa, and his daughter, Christi Thompson, of Hanlontown, Iowa; five grandchildren, Amanda Thompson, and her fiancé, Robert Lauritson, Angela Thompson, Jason Thompson, Jordan Bancroft-Smithe, and Matthew Bancroft-Smithe; his sister, Elaine White, of Schullsburg, Wisconsin; and his sister-in-law, Kate Cruse, of Benton, Wisconsin; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Burl, Gerald, Ralph, and Clyde.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 28, 2011, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Otto Chose Post #235. Inurnment will take place at Salem Memorial Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
