Marlin Fisher
(June 27, 1915 - September 12, 2010)

Surrounded by his family, Marlin Fisher, age 95, of Thompson, Iowa, died at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt on September 12, 2010.

Marlin E. Fisher was born June 27, 1915, in Forest City, Iowa, to Forest and Emma (Schauf) Fisher. The family moved to Thompson in 1919 where Marlin spent his whole life until he moved to the Forest Plaza assisted living facility in 2007.

Marlin graduated from the Thompson Public High School in 1932. He quietly gave of his time in the Thompson community. He served as the treasurer of the United Methodist Church for over 40 years and on the Thompson town council. He was an active member of the Lions Club and a Library board member. He was active in the fund raising for the original Thompson pool and umpired baseball and softball games.

Marlin married Bertha Ailts in 1937. They were married twenty-one years until her passing in December 1958. Marlin married Della Elaine Branstad in 1962. They were married for 44 years until her death in January 2006.

Marlin worked his entire life and was very proud of it. At age thirteen, he was setting pins at the Thompson bowling alley where he earned a penny a pin, and he also worked at the Thompson Creamery. Marlin started delivering fuel oil in 1936. For over 50 years, he delivered petroleum products to local farmers and families with a butterscotch candy in his pocket. Marlin worked for many years at DX and finished his career with the Thompson Co-op elevator. He retired one week before his 75th birthday.

After retirement, he and Della began to travel every winter with family and friends. On many adventures, they were accompanied by Cliff and Grace Branstad. They went to such exotic places as Hawaii, St. Thomas, Alaska, and Mexico. They even took a cruise through the Panama Canal. Their favorite trip was to the island of Aruba.

Marlin took up the game of golf at age 50 and became an avid player. He hardly ever missed a day at Gruis. He celebrated two holes in one during his golfing days. Prior to discovering golf, Marlin was a member of a Wednesday night bowling league in Lake Mills and rolled a perfect game. He was a big fan of the Minnesota Twins and a lifelong reader.

Marlin is survived by his children, Merry Fisher, Carroll (Theresa) Fisher, Linda (Don) Stevens, Tom Carmody (Mary Kiesau), Laurie (Joe) Farnen, and Kathleen (John) Nettleton; his grandchildren, Curt (Jenn) Ratcliff, Tucker (Sara) Stevens, Christopher Stevens, Sam and Jack Farnen, and Thomas and Emily Nettleton; and his great grandchild, Reese Rae Ratcliff. He is also survived by his brothers, Raymon (Joyce) Fisher and Richard (Margaret) Fisher; his sisters, Doris (Frank) Murphy and Geraldine (Jason) Goumas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marlin was preceded in death by his first wife, Bertha, and his second wife, Della; his daughter, Shanlyn (Rex) Ratcliff; three children in infancy, Marlin Fisher, Jr., Rochelle and Sally Jo; his parents, Emma and Forest; his brothers, Maurice, Carroll, Robert and Roger, who died in infancy; and his sisters, Ruth (Joe) Heitland, Faye (Richard) Timms, Dorothy (George) Truman, and Gloria (Richard) Winter.
