(August 7, 1914 - September 10, 2010)

Leila Koppen, age 96, of Buffalo Center, Iowa, died at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center on September 10, 2010.

Leila Marie Koppen was born August 7, 1914, at Britt, Iowa, to Louis and Ella (Nelson) Hanson.

She graduated from Britt High School and Britt Junior College where she earned a teaching degree. She taught for seven years in the rural schools of Hancock and Kossuth Counties.

She moved to Lakota with her parents in 1936. On December 27, 1940, she was united in marriage to Orville Koppen at the Methodist Church in Lakota. They farmed in the Lakota vicinity until 1952 when they moved to a farm northeast of Buffalo Center. In 1979, they moved into a home in Buffalo Center, Iowa. Leila moved into the Timely Mission Nursing Home in 2008.

Leila worked side by side with her husband on the farm. She will be remembered for always being prepared to serve a delicious meal to anyone who stopped by unannounced and for having a clean, tidy home.

She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church serving as President, Vice President, and Secretary of the United Methodist Women. She taught Sunday School for over 30 years, was the church historian, and served as secretary to the Administrative Board. In 1992, she served as chairperson of the church centennial committee. She also enjoyed her work with the Farm Bureau Women and was a member of the Northside Birthday Club.

Leila is survived by her daughters: Phyllis Aufderhar, and her husband, Jerry, of Le Sueur, Minnesota, and Rochelle Fisher, and her husband, Sam, of Boone, Iowa; her grandchildren: Ron Ensley, and his wife, Jennifer, of Phoenix, Arizona, Mike Ensley, and his wife, Kori, of Clive, Kristin Skelley, and husband, John, of Henderson, Minnesota, Jordan Fisher, and his wife, Allison, of Boone, and Brooke Foxworthy, and husband, Mike, of West Lake Village, California; eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Lucille Koppen of Buffalo Center and Genevieve Wayne of Ellendale, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Orville in 2001, her parents, and her brother Stanley.

Funeral Services for Leila will be held Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at 11:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Shannon Pascual officiating. Burial will follow at Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.

Friends and Family may attend her visitation on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center from 9:45 AM to 11 AM.
