(August 12, 1929 - October 29, 2010)Carl J. “Ole” Olson, age 81, of Lake Mills, died Friday, October 29, 2010, surrounded by his family at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.
Carl J. Olson, Jr., was born on August 12, 1929, in Charles City, Iowa, the son of Carl, Sr., and Doris (Ebert) Olson. He attended country school in Mitchell County and graduated from Osage High School in 1948 where he participated in football and wrestling.
In 1950, Carl was united in marriage with Norma Heinz. To that union, three children were born: Nancy, Kathy, and Steven.
In earlier years, Carl worked for various businesses including Statebrand Butter in Mason City and John Deere in Moline, Illinois, and he owned a business in Mitchell, Iowa. He was active in stock car racing and competition trap shooting.
On June 24, 1972, Carl was united in marriage with Marjorie Barrett at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. With this union, he gained four step-children, Donna, Robert, Bruce, and James, and a daughter, Karla, was born.
After moving to Lake Mills, Carl worked at Certain-Teed Drainage and later at Winnebago Industries until his retirement.
A kind and caring man, Carl enjoyed being with and teasing younger children. Many knew him as Papa Ole. Carl enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, racing, and watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports, and he had a passion for chewing Copenhagen. He was an ambitious, hard working man who took pride in providing for his family. Carl cherished his relationships with his friends and loved his family dearly.
Carl is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of Lake Mills; his children, Nancy (Glen) VanderPlas, of Joice, Iowa, Kathy (Bob) Bilodeau, of Machesney Park, Illinois, Steven (Debbie) Olson, of Rockford, Illinois, Karla (Christopher) Eaton, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Donna (Gary) Harig, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Robert Barrett of Austin, Minnesota, Bruce (Elaine) Barrett of Owatonna, Minnesota, and James (Nikki) Barrett of Lake Mills, Iowa. He is also survived by his brother, Gordon (Jeannine) Olson, of Mitchell, Iowa; and his sister, Carol (Allyn) Milton, of Osage, Iowa; and by many brothers- and sisters-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating. Following the funeral, his remains will be cremated with inurnment at a later date.
Visitation will be on Monday, November 1, 2010, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
