(April 12, 1909 - October 13, 2010)Mabel R. Mathews, 101, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.
Mabel Ruth Mathews was born April 12, 1909, in Worth County, Iowa, to Tom and Annie (Aasland) Quisling. She was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa. Mabel graduated from Lake Mills High School and attended the Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught in Winnebago County country schools.
Mabel married Myron Mathews on September 7, 1930, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, and they farmed together in the Leland, Iowa, area for many years. They were active members of the West Prairie and Our Saviors Lutheran churches. They retired and moved to Lake Mills in 1972 and became members of Salem Lutheran Church. Mabel enjoyed participating in many activities and organizations. She was very creative and was an excellent seamstress. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends.
Mabel is survived by her three daughters, Marilyn (Francis) Johnson, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, LuAnn (Ron) Eide, of Forest City, Iowa, and Dorene (Bernie) Riekena, of Bloomington, Minnesota; one brother, Walter Quisling, of Mesa, Arizona; ten grandchildren, Dianna (Bob) Benoy, of Hudson, Wisconsin; Dan (Jane) Johnson, of Albert Lea, Minnesota; Lori (Jim) Bakken, of Fremont, Nebraska, Ronna (Steve) Gill, of Reno, Nevada, Suzanne Eide of Clive, Iowa, Joel (Deb) Eide, of West Des Moines, Iowa, Rosanne (Daryl) Brown, of Boone, Iowa, Jodee (John) Rajkowski, of Golden Valley, Minnesota, Jim Riekena of Savage, Minnesota, Joe (Sheelagh) Riekena, of Pacific Grove, California; eleven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Myron; sister, Beatrice Charlson; brothers, Alvin, Obert, Nieman, and George Quisling; and grandson, Jeff Riekena.
Funeral services will be 1:30 PM, Saturday, October 23, 2010, at Salem Lutheran Church with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating.
Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service only.
Burial will take place at Sunnyside Cemetery in Lake Mills, Iowa.
