Darvin Kettwick
(August 27, 1955 - June 3, 2010)

Darvin H. Kettwick, age 54, of Buffalo Center, Iowa, passed away at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, Iowa, on Thursday, June 3, 2010.

Darvin Harold Kettwick, son of Harold and Deloris (Dontje) Kettwick, was born in Buffalo Center on August 27, 1955. He was baptized and confirmed at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center.

Darv graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1973. He attended Iowa State University and then went on to work at Kleinwort’s Hog Farm prior to farming for 28 years with his dad, brother Mike, and cousin Bryan Wessels until his death.

On August 30, 1997, Darvin was united in marriage to Robin (Kramme) Howell, daughter of Edward and Jody Kramme of Osage, at the First Reformed Church. Chris and Abby, Robin’s children, were a major part of this newly formed family.

Darv was actively involved with things that were important to him. He was a member of the First Reformed Church and served on the consistory as an elder and deacon. He was also a choir member and Sunday School teacher. The Winnebago County Fair was a special tradition. He was a long-time fair board member, beef barn superintendent, and served eight years as president. Darvin was a life-time alumni member of the Bison FFA. Judging crop shows, proficiency awards, and speaking contests at the local to state levels gave him a great deal of joy and satisfaction. As recently as May 18th, he and Bryan tilled and planted the FFA plot.

Darv believed in being practical, comfortable, and close to home. He valued a quality work ethic, traditions, honest opinions, and the concept of “tough love” to help children be the best they could be. Special moments in his young life included FFA livestock judging, crop shows, and awards including earning the Iowa Farmer Degree. He enjoyed showing livestock at the county and state levels and was proud of winning the Grand Champion Chester White Female in the open class competition at the Iowa State Fair.

His selection for first-team all conference in football was valued. He enjoyed his collection of pigs and FFA semis. Playing slow-pitch softball, watching the Kentucky Derby, helping at Crazy Days, mixing batter at Pancake Day, and making the world’s best caramel popcorn at Christmas were important to him.

Darvin died at the age of 54 surrounded by family on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Kossuth County Regional Health Center after a valiant battle with cancer. According to his wishes, his body was cremated with inurnment at Graceland Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife Robin of Buffalo Center; children Chris Howell of Clear Lake; Abby Howell of Mason City; mother Deloris Kettwick of Buffalo Center. Mourning his loss are his sister and brothers: Madonna Kettwick of Waukon, Iowa; Michael (Carole) Kettwick of Buffalo Center; Wayne (Tracy) Kettwick of DeWitt; and David(Renee)Kettwick of Clarinda. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, and the rest of Robin’s family. Darvin was preceded in death by his grandparents, his father Harold and his nephew Tyler.

Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center at 10:30AM with Reverend Bill Peake officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 PM Monday, June 7, 2010, at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center, Iowa.
