Wallace Earle Stegner, 84, Pulitzer Prize-winning author who wrote about the American West; he won the 1972 Pulitzer Prize for Angle of Repose, a novel about an elderly, ailing man's process of coming to terms with his own life while researching the lives of his pioneer grandparents; a prolific author, he won the National Book Award in 1977 for The Spectator Bird; one of his most popular novels was The Big Rock Candy Mountain (1943); he also wrote nonfiction works; born February 18, 1909 in Lake Mills, Iowa; died April 13 at a hospital in Santa Fe, New Mexico of injuries suffered in a car accident March 28.
