Mrs. Chase observes 98th

Maude Chase, 5l1 S. 18th St., celebrated her 98th birthday Monday. She was showered with cards from friends, and visitors dropped in throughout the day.

She joined her family in celebrating with a birthday cake in the evening.

Special guests at the celebration were Debra Ickes, Mrs. Chase's great-granddaughter; her husband, Nick, and son, Daniel, from Hampton Va. The Ickes family stopped in Fort Dodge before going to Holland, where Ickes will be stationed with , the U .S. Air Force for three years.

Maude Hale was born in Sisseton, S.D. and came to Fort Dodge with her parents as a young girl. She grew up in the house in which she now lives. She was a recorder for the Royal Neighbor Insurance Company camp 340, located in Fort Dodge, for over 50 years.

She married Lee (Leander) Chase, an area, carpenter. They moved into an
upstairs apartment in her family’s home so she could take care of her
mother, who was bed ridden.

Mrs. Chase has a stepdaughter, Mona Stupka, Santa Barbara, Calif., four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She raised her grandson, Roger Weaver, from the time he was 7. He served in the U .S. Air Force for 26-1/2, years, retired and returned in 1977, with his wife, Diane, to his grandmother's home, so she could continue to live there following a stroke.

She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and continues to enjoy sewing. She makes about 50 quilt blocks a month as a part of the sewing circle at First Presbyterian Church to complete. She also knits hats, mittens and scarves with the circle.
