“Sigurd S. Olson, 55, World War I Veteran, is Dead”

“Sigurd S. (Sig) Olson, 55, died Tuesday afternoon at the veterans hospital in Des Moines, where he had been a medical patient for the past 17 days. Mr. Olson, a longtime resident of Fort Dodge, had been custodian of the V. F. W. clubrooms for the past 14 years.

Funeral arrangements, at present incomplete, are in charge of the Wilder and Bruce funeral home. The time and place of services will be announced later. The body was returned to Fort Dodge and was taken to the funeral home late Tuesday.

Mr. Olson, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gust A Olson, was born Feb. 25, 1893, at Michigamme, Mich. He moved to Fort Dodge with his parents when he was a small child and had made his home here ever since. He had never married.

A veteran of World War I, he served in the 77th division, headquarters company, 307th infantry. He enlisted in the army at Des Moines July 25, 1918. After participating in a number of major battles in France, he was returned to the states in April of 1919 and received his honorable discharge May 18, 1919.

He was a member of the V. F. W. post here, the Cooties, the American Legion post, the Forty and Eight, and the Elks lodge.

Military services at the graveside at St. Olaf cemetery will be in charge of the V. F. W. post.

Surviving Mr. Olson are one sister, Mrs. Carl Olson of Fort Dodge; and three brothers, Ernest V. Olson of Fort Dodge, Elmer H. Olson of Chicago, Ill., and Herbert C. Olson of Tacoma, Wash. His parents, two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.”

“Funeral rites for Sigurd S. Olson, 55, who died Tuesday at the veterans’ hospital in Des Moines following a two weeks’ illness, will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Wilder and Bruce funeral home.

The Rev. B. A. Olsen, assistant pastor of Grace Lutheran church, will be at St. Olaf cemetery.

Mr. Olson, a longtime resident of Fort Dodge, had for 14 years been custodian of the V. F. W. post clubrooms here.”

“Funeral Services For Sigurd S. Olson”

“Funeral rites for Sigurd S. Olson, 55, custodian of the V. F. W. clubrooms for 14 years, were largely attended Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Wilder and Bruce funeral home. The Rev. B. A. Olsen, assistant pastor of Grace Lutheran church, conducted the services and burial was in St. Olaf cemetery.

Mrs. Thomas Ward and Mrs. Oscar Olson sang ‘One Sweetly Solemn Thought’ and ‘The Lord Is My Shepherd’ during the services. Serving as accompanist was Mrs. Donald Breese.

The many flowers while completely banked the service rooms, were arranged by Mrs. Charles Dollar, Mrs. W. A. Bertsch, Mrs. Emil Mobius, Mrs. Cecil Herman and Mrs. Sarah Hair, all member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary.

Pallbearers were Henry A. Hanson, Edward C. Holland, W. A. Bertsch, Carl V. Carlson, Walter C. Berg and Harry D. Arnold. All are members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post. Honorary pallbearers were George F. Scheidel, Guy Enterline and Charles Wheeler of the Fort Dodge American Legion post; Andrew J. Cote, Thomas M. Harrington and Jay Longstaff of the Forty and Eight.

Military Escort

The Veterans of Foreign Wars post, acting as a military escort, conducted military rites at the graveside. Members of the firing squad, commanded by John Ault, were Ardo R. Thompson, Ralph M. Hanson, Waldo Flemming, James H. Fitzgerald, Melverd Orakog, Frank Pessica, Carl Rohrbeck and John T. Hood. Color guards and bearers were Charles Dollar, Roscoe Gunther, Sherman Johnson and W. E. Miller. Representing the Cooties at the services were Elwyn O. Sells Forest Davenport, Karl O. Hauge and G. A. Whittington.

Members of the American Legion post, V. F. W., V. F. W. auxiliary, Cooties, Elks lodge, and the Forty and Eight attended the services in groups. Members of the V. F. W. auxiliary formed an honorary escort as the casket was carried from the funeral home and to the graveside.
The flag was presented to the family by V. F. W. Commander Mike Awn, who was assisted by Elwyn O. Sells.

Following the services a lunch was served to the family at the Carl Olson residence by Mrs. C. V. Carlson, Mrs. Esther Carlstrom, Mrs. Jesse Thompson, Mrs. Arthur Thompson and Mrs. John Cody, all members of the V. F. W. auxiliary.

Out-of-town relatives who attended the rites included Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Olson of Chicago, Ill., Ronald Olson of Des Moines and Mr. and Mrs. O. B. Lundgren of Burnside.”
