OBITUARY

Francis W. Eckles was born in what is now West Virginia, Aug. 8, 1838. Died in Seymour, Iowa, Aug. 16, 1890 aged 52 years and 8 days. He has lived principally in this state since 1857. He served three years in the 80th Iowa Infantry in Company "G." Was mustered out with the regiment. The year before the war he was married to Armina Johnson. Of this union there were ten children, five boys and five girls. Three of the boys and all of the girls are now living. He buried his wife Oct. 29, 1883. After six years during which time he kept his family together, he was again married. Mr. Eckles was respected as a good citizen and neighbor and an affectionate father. For several years before his fatal illness he was a faithful employee of the C. R. I. & P. R'y Company. Most of the time since last February he has been confined to the house and much of the time to his bed. The disease rapidly increasing in severity; the final illness being extremely painful. He was at one time a member of the M. E. Church but had recently made no profession of Christianity, though he expressed himself as a penitent believer shortly before his death. We hope he has gone to a peaceful rest with the Lord. The funeral service was conducted at the Christian church Sunday, Aug. 17, after which the remains were buried by the G. A. R. in the Seymour cemetery.
