Obituary of H. C. Gamble

H. C. Gamble was born October 25, 1842 at Darbyville, Ohio. He was killed in a train wreck near Park City, Montana, September 25, being aged sixty-seven years, and one month.

On August 21, 1861 Mr. Gamble enlisted as a private in Co. H. 30th regiment Ohio Infantry Volunteers, at Camp Chase, Ohio. After a time he was transferred to Co. A. He made a splendid soldier and officer, and was rapidly promoted to the position of sargeant, lieutenant and then captain. He was discharged at Columbus, Ohio, October 2, 1865.

He was married to Miss Inez B. Applegate October 2, 1872, in Hendricks county, Indiana. To this union were born six children, two of whom have preceded the father to the better land. Those left to mourn the loss of a loving father are Charles, who lives in Massachusetts, Arthur, Carrie and Edith who lived at home.

He moved to Humeston in 1886 and has since made this his home. He was a member of the Methodist church, a good citizen and will be sadly missed by his comrades and fellow workmen.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church last Wednesday at two o'clock by the pastor, Rev. J. A. Ross, who paid a fitting tribute to him as a soldier, patriot and citizen. Burial was made in the cemetery north of town, soldier comrades acting as pall bearers.
