DEATH NOTICE:

FRY, Ernest, Glenn, 95, of Humeston, Iowa, died on Monday, September 17, 2012 at the Chariton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chariton, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 21, 2012 at the Humeston Christian United Methodist Church in Humeston, Iowa with Pastor Dale O'Connell officiating. Interment was held in the Humeston Cemetery with Military Honors by Cowl-Scott American Legion Post #80 of Leon, Iowa. Arrangements were through Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon, Iowa.

A memorial fund has been established by the family.

ERNEST GLENN FRY ... Ernest Glenn Fry , age 95 of Humeston, Iowa, son of Clarence Thomas and Jessie [Blair] Fry, was born May 19, 1917 at Van Wert, Iowa and died September 17, 2012 at Chariton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chariton, Iowa.

Ernie graduated from Humeston High School in 1934. He married Vera Maxine McDonald on April 7, 1940 at Princeton, Missouri. Three sons blessed this union: James Richard on July 15, 1941, Larry Keith on November 18, 1943, and Richard Lee on June 25, 1945. Nephew Dennis Fry was also a member of the household.

Ernie served his country during World War II. He entered the United states Army Corps on March 26, 1943 and served as a Trail Gunner on the plane "Satan's Siren". He was a Staff Sergeant stationed in Italy and North Africa in a bombardier squad. He was in the European theater and flew missions over Germany, Austria, Poland, and Hungry. The squad had to complete 50 bomb drops before he was discharged on October 2, 1945.

Ernie was a jack-of-all trades and worked various jobs throughout his life. These included meat cutter at the Humeston Grocery Store, cook at Jimmie's Highway Cafe, painting and construction with his brother Lawrence, City of Humeston Water Department, and retiring as a Postal Clerk for the U.S. Postal Service.

He was the commander of Alva F. Eaton American Legion Post #306 of Humeston form many years. Ernie was also a Mason and had served on the Humeston Volunteer Fire Department. He was a longtime member of the Humeston Christian United Methodist Church.

An avid golfer, Ernie helped build, maintain, and mow the Humeston Golf Course. Family Christmas Eve was always spent with Ernie and Maxine, and Ernie made oyster soup. He loved to cook and be with his family. Many special memories were made with the grand kids and great grand kids at Grandpa and gramdma's big house. And, grandpa and Nathan spent many special days playing golf at the golf course fishing at the reservoir.

Ernie and Maxine had many enjoyable walleye fishing trips to Minnesota and Canada with friends. They were also avid season-ticket Hawkeye football fans and got to attend the Rose Bowl.

Preceding Ernie in death were his parents; infant son James Richard Fry; wife Maxine Fry on April 27, 2001; son Richard Lee Fry on January 28, 2012; and four brothers: Owen, Lawrence, Lloyd, and Raymond Fry.

Surviving are his son Larry Fry and wife Paula of Portland, Oregon; daughter-in-law Ronda Fry of Humeston; four grandchildren: Kathryn Amanda Fry of Bend Oregon, Angela Marie "Angie" Horton and husband Andy of Corydon, Iowa, Andrea Michelle Hanson and husband Kevin of Humeston, and Eric Lee Fry and wife Brenda of Centerville, Iowa; three great grandsons: Nathaniel Lee Hanson, Cameron Thomas Fry, and Justin Todd Horton; sisters-in-law Vivian Garton and husband Howard Howard of Humeston and Margaret Bellon of Sacramento, New Mexico; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
