Obituary -

(The Humeston New Era Humeston, Iowa April 25, 1917)

E. L. Dennis ... The funeral of E. L. Dennis of Chanute, Kans., formerly a resident of Humeston, was held from the Baptist Church in this city at two o'clock yesterday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. M.S. Clark of Chariton. Many friends paid last honors to their old friend. Interment was made at Cambria Cemetery.

Mr. Dennis died Sunday afternoon at his home in Canute. He was brought here yesterday morning, accompanied by his wife, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Snyder of Humeston, who had gone to Chanute, Mr. and Mrs. Herl Dennis and Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Horton of Chanute.

The following appeared in the Chanute Daily of Monday:

Ezekiel Levi Dennis was born on April 24, 1850, in Illinois and died April 11, 1917, in Chanute, Kans., aged 66 years, 11 months and 29 days. He was married to Elizabeth Shunterman on July 13, 1871.

To this union five children were born, two of whom died in infancy. Those surviving are: Mrs. May Snyder of Humeston, Mrs. Grace Horton of Chanute, Kans., and Herl Dennis who is a partner and junior member of the firm of Dennis & Son on East Main Street.

Mrs. Snyder and husband came from Iowa this morning and with the family will leave on the Flyer at 6:40 for Humeston where the funeral will be preached tomorrow and burial made in the family cemetery.

Mr. Dennis was an active man all the early part of his life. He moved from Illinois to Iowa and engaged in farming and stock raising. Raising cattle was his business for many years, but on account of asthma he had to leave Iowa and in the year 1906 he came to Kansas and bought the farm in Big Creek Township where his son and son-in-law lived. With his wife they engaged in the furniture business in Chanute which business he managed successfully until his death. He was an honest, hard working business man and he made many friends by his honest, straight-forward way of doing business. Besides his wife and three children whom are left to mourn his death, are two brothers and one sister.

There will be short services at the house at 6 o'clock this evening, conducted by Rev. E.A. Blackman of the Christian Church.
