There are some records in Washington Co, IA for a John Shields but I don’t believe they pertain to your John Shields: John R Shields listed in 1852, 1850 and 1860 Census; John Shields married to a Clara Armstrong 1873; John Shields in Patrons’ Directory 1894 Platbook as dealer in Coal, Wood, Lime, Sewer Pipe, Etc. Other Shields records include: James & Eliza Jane married 1866; James & Ella Bell married 1885; Sarah married Milton Cresewell 1870; Milan married Nettie Anderson 1900; Emily Maude married Donald Sherman 1903; Emily married Edward Armstrong 1874; William A. graduated Wash Jr. College & H.S. 1930. There is a listing of burials for Shields in the WPA Graves project.
