Vernon G. Stagner, 56, owner and operator of Stagner Drug Store for the past 20 years, died Friday, September 3, 1976 at Mercy Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at 10:30 at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Rodger McKinney officiating. Burial was in Sharon Hill Cemetery. Masonic services were held at Peterseim Funeral Home Sunday evening. Memorial contributions are being made to United Methodist, of which he was a member, or to the Kalona Jaycee Ball Park.
Pall Bearers were Roy Meer, Dr. M.L. Tweeton, Marion Stransky, Clifford Small, Raymond Yotty, Dr. Bill Clark, Stanley Mouser and Dr. C.W. Beckman.
Mr. Stagner was born Feb. 14, 1920 in Kalona to Lloyd and Mable Chezz Stagner. He married Eunice Craig on June 6, 1942 at Riverside.
He was a graduate of Kalona High School and Washington Junior College in 1939 and he received a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the University of Iowa in 1949. He worked for seven years at McDaniel Drug Store in Washington prior to purchasing the drug store in Kalona. He served as a flight instructor, with the rank of second lieutenant, during World War II.
Stagner was a member of Richmond Lodge No. 97 and Naomi Chapter of OES, which he served as past master and patron. He was a member of Kaaba Shrine Club, the Iowa and American Pharmaceutical Associations, the U of I Alumni Association, Kalona Community Club and a past president of Rotary Club of Kalona.
Survivors include his wife, Eunice and two sons, William C. and Robert A., both of Iowa City. He was preceded in death by his parents.
