Kalona Mayor Held On Murder Charges

Richard D. Adams, 38, mayor of Kalona, is being held in Washington County jail in connection with the shooting death of his wife last Friday morning. He is being held on an open charge of murder.
Found dead in the family home at 612 D. Avenue was Judith (Judy) Adams, 35. Her husband contacted Kalona police shortly after the shooting then drove to the Public Safety Center in Washington where he turned himself and the weapon in.
An intensive investigation by county sheriff's officers and the Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation followed the shooting.
Time of the shooting has been placed around 8 a.m. by authorities.
Adams appeared before Magistrate Bernard Dawson Saturday in a preliminary arraignment, where bond was set at $250,000. Dawson consented to a request by Adams to have court appointed attorneys subject to a financial disclosure. Appointed to defend Adams were Tracy Anderson of Kalona, and James D. McGarragher of Iowa City.
The judge also set 10 a.m. September 10 as the time for a preliminary hearing on the open charge of murder. He sustained a motion by the defense attorneys that establishes a "confidential file" for all case related documents.
Adams was on vacation from his duties at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City. The family moved into their recently purchased home in June.
The couple's three children, Richard, 15; Joni, 14; and Steve, 9, were taken Friday by Rev. and Mrs. John D. Woodin, their minister. A memorial fund has been established to build a trust fund for their care. Donations may be left at the Kalona Savings Bank and the Farmers Savings Bank.
Judy was very active in community affairs. She was a past president of the Idris Club and a member of the Town Players, a community theatre group. She was instumental in creation of the Rec Center, and after it was established, spent almost endless hours at the center seeing that chaperones were there on nights that the center was open, as well as keeping the place clean and attractive to youngsters.
She was an accomplished organist and pianist and was organist at the United Christian and Baptist Church since she was ten years old. She played at countless funerals and weddings as well as any other social functions in the Kalona Community.
Judith Rae Adams was born September 18, 1940, the daughter of Stanley and Raymah Trask Dawson. She lived in Kalona her entire life, graduating from Kalona High School and attending St. Luke's Nursing School in Cedar Rapids.
Services for Mrs. Adams were 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Christian Baptist Church in Kalona, with the Rev. John Woodin officiating. Burial was in the Sharon Hill Cemetery. Peterseim Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Pall bearers were Rodger McKinney, Lawrence Griffiths, Mike Beck, Tracy Anderson, Warren Olson and James Strabala.
Mrs. Adams is survived by her husband, three children, Richard, 15, Joni, 14, and Steve, 9; and her mother, Mrs. Stanley Dawson of Kalona. She was preceded in death by her father and grandparents.
