Funeral Services Held For Kalona Businessmen

E.J. Hesselschwerdt

Emil J. Hesselschwerdt, 88, a lifelong resident of Kalona, died Tuesday morning, November 18, 1975 at Pleasantview Home where he had resided for the past six years. He operated the Hesselschwerdt General Store for 61 years until his retirement.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Kalona United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rodger McKinney and the Rev. C. Dendy Garrett officiating and assisted by Rev. Alva Swartzendruber. Burial will be in the Sharon Hill Cemetery. Visitation is at Peterseim Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established.
Pall bearers will be Gene Johnson, James Strabala, C.C. Shimon, Ora Keiser, V.D. Hochstetler and Delmar Schlabaugh.
Military services will be conducted by Richmond AmVets Post 107.
He was born April 10, 1887 to William and Katherina Hesselschwerdt. He was a graduate of Kalona High School. On March 3, 1920 he married Amy Sandt at Brooklyn. She died in 1963.
Mr. Hesselschwerdt served with the Kalona Fire Department and was director of the Kalona Savings Bank until a year ago. He was a member of the Kalona Methodist Church and a charter member of the Kalona American Legion and the Kalona Rotary Club. He served as a lieutenant in World War I and was a Friend of Scouting and holder of the Silver Beaver Award. Hew as a lay visiting minister for the Washington, Iowa Methodist Church and a spiritual leader at Pleasantview Home.
Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Treva Marie Rice of Bellville, Mich. and Mrs. Martha Louise Norenberg of Adel, a son, Donald Hesselschwerdt of Grand Rapids, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Marie Sykes of Newton; a brother, Dave Hesselschwerdt of St. Joseph, Mo.
