Elaine Marie Anderson

Elaine Marie Anderson, 68, of Brighton, formerly of Des Moines, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, at the M.L. McCreedy Home in Washington, Iowa.

A celebration of life service is at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa, with the Rev. Kitch Shatzer officiating. Washington American Legion Post 29 will conduct military honors. Interment will be at a later date.

Visitation with family begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, and hour prior to the service.

Memorials have been established for the Wounded Warrior Project.

Ms. Anderson was born Nov. 4, 1945, in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Merlyn and Emma Smith Anderson.

She attended Walnut No. 5 country school in Germanville and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1964. She attended Westmar College in LeMars before joining the U.S. Army in 1966.

She served in the Army for two years where she did courier work.

She graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant in 1971 with her bachelor of arts degree in accounting.

She moved to Des Moines where she worked several jobs before going to work for the city of Des Moines.

She worked as the payroll clerk for the Wastewater Treatment Plant until her retirement in 2010.

She retired from the Army Reserves in 2008 after serving in the Reserves for more than 20 years. She was proud of her time in the Reserves and enjoyed her travels, many of which took her overseas.

She lived most of her adult life in the Des Moines area.

She moved back to the home farm in 2011 to be closer to her family.

She enjoyed her time back on the farm and liked to garden.

Survivors include three brothers, Roy Anderson and Robert Anderson, both of Brighton, and Richard Anderson and spouse Kim Melhenbacher of Storm Lake; and one sister, Kathleen Anderson of Brighton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Roger Anderson; and one sister, Phyllis Hird.
