V. J. SPEVACEK TAKEN IN DEATH NEW YEAR’S DAY

Vencil J. Spevacek son of Jos and Anna Holub Spevacek, was born at Richmond, Iowa on September 30, 1870 and passed away at his home in Kalona on January 1, 1944. He had been in poor health for some time and was taken to the hospital on Tuesday for observation. He rapidly became worse, however, and when no hope was held out for his recovery he asked to be taken home. He returned home on Thursday and passed away on Saturday morning.

Mr. Spevacek was united in marriage to Mary Tellin on May 3, 1897 at her farm home near Richmond. Three children were born to this union. He spent his entire life in this community, living for seven years after his marriage in Richmond and then moving to the farm where he lived until he moved to Kalona about five years ago. The earlier part of his life was spent as a carpenter and contractor and many homes and other buildings in this community remain as a testimony to his skill.

He was a member of the Z. C.B. J. Lodge for many years and served the lodge as both President and Secretary for a number of years. He was a great lover of music and for a number of years led the bands in both Richmond and Kalona.

Those who survive him are his wife: three children, Olga (Mrs. John Shalla) of this community; Joe G. of Chicago, Illinois; and Blanche (Mrs. E. R. Cartwright) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two granddaughters, Darlene Shalla and Mavis Spevacek; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives. One brother and two sisters preceded him in death.

Besides the relatives there are many friends made during his long life in this community who join the family in their sorrow at his passing. Many who were served by his skill as a builder will often think of him as they continue to live in the homes and use the various other buildings which he constructed; and those who shared his love for music and whose lives were made lighter and happier by his playing will be reminded of him whenever they hear again the music he loved. Mr. Spevacek was a great lover of children and was always doing something for the children of the neighborhood. The children loved to be around him and he loved to have them in his home. He was also interested in all the happenings of the neighborhood. He was a kind and loving husband and father and a good neighbor. He will be long and affectionately remembered by all who knew him. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, January 3 at the Kalona Methodist church with the Rev. S. C. Peterson in charge. Burial was made in the Richmond cemetery.

CARD OF THANKS
We desire to thank our friends for their kindness, flowers and sincere words of sympathy in our late bereavement. The Family
