Dale M. Smith, 89, of Washington, died Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at the Washington County Hospital in Washington following a decline in health. Dale was born May 17, 1922, near Wellman, Iowa, son of George Milton and Eva D. (Ramsey)Smith. Dale was united in marriage to Mary E. Custer on Sep 13, 1947, in Sigourney. Dale is survived by his wife Mary E. Smith of Washington; son Bruce A. and wife Peg of Washington; daughter, Jan M. Wagenknecht and husband Rick of Washington; son Roger D. of Washington; and son Kevin G. and Deb of Brighton; grandsons, Sean Wagenknecht and Jenny Simmering of Ainsworth; Ryan Wagenknecht and Ciara Dietrich of Washington; one great grandson, Paul Michael Wagenknecht of Washington; brothers-in-law Dave Brinning of Washington; Wayne Wilson of Arizona; and sister-in-law Ruth Woodword of Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by his parents;sisters Aileen Shull, Donna Wilson, Norma Brinning, Evelyn Neff; and brothers Donald and Charles.
