Joe Smith

BRIGHTON - Joe Smith, 82, of Brighton, died Tuesday, March 26, 1996, at Washington Care Cente in Washington, Iowa. He had been in failing health. The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Church of God in Brighton, with the Rev. Rick Zickefoose officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton. A general memorial has been established.

Smith was born May 28, 1913, in a log cabin near Four Corners, the son of William Henry and Della Huffman Smith. He grew up near Four Corners and attended Mohawk country school. On July 27, 1933, he married Ruth Ellen Volger in Ottumwa. He worked for 33 years for various railroads and also as a farm laborer. He was a member and deacon of First Church of God.

Surviving are his wife of Brighton; four daughters, Shirley L. Gordon, Connie Schooley, Peggy Ambrose and Nancy E. Kelly, all of Brighton; six sons, Gary L. of Arkansas, Dennie W. of Higbee, Mo., Jack R. of Washington, Jerry O., Rick G. and Tim A., all of Brighton; 29 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Emma Manning of Coppock; and a brother, Willard of Gentry, Ark. Three brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.
