Lois Irene Benda

Lois Irene Benda, 91, of 400 E. Tyler St., Washington, Iowa, died Sunday evening, Jan. 19, 2003, at M.L. McCreedy Home.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church, with the Rev. M. Eugene Benda and the Rev. Dennis Martin officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in East Pleasant Plain.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Jones Eden Funeral Home in Washington. The family will be present from 7-8:30 p.m. with a prayer service to begin at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Benda was born June 8, 1911, in Brighton, the daughter of Robert and Clara Wanerus McClintic. She married Max B. Benda April 25, 1932, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in East Pleasant Plain. He died in 1996.

She attended country school and received normal training in high school. After her marriage she lived on the Benda century farm while continuing her education at Parsons College, University of Iowa and Iowa Wesleyan College. She graduated from Parsons and taught school for 31 years. In 1969 she and her husband retired from farming and built a home in Brighton. She continued to teach in the Fairfield school district at Pleasant Plain until her retirement. She moved, with her husband, into Halcyon House in 1988. In December 2000, she moved into the M.L. McCreedy home.

She belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma in Fairfield, Retired Teachers Association, American Legion Auxiliary, St. Joseph Altar and Rosary and was a lifetime member of Iowa State Education Association.

Survivors include one daughter Joyce A. Guy and husband Lathol of Brighton; two sons, M. Eugene Benda of Tipton and James J. Benda and wife Beverly of Mount Pleasant; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, John and Max McClintic; and two sisters, Phyllis Neal and Mabel Supalla.
