Bernard. J. Reed, 82, dies

Bernard J. Reed, 82, of Washington, died Monday, April 17, 2000, at the McCreedy Home in Washington, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be at 3:30 p. m. on Wednesday, April 19, at the St. James Catholic Church in Washington, with the Rev. Dennis Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today with family visitation from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Jones & Eden Funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of Washington County.

Mr. Reed was born Aug. 14, 1917, in Keokuk County to Harry and Rosina (Smith) Reed. He attended St. James School in Washington. He married Lola Hartman in 1940 in Washington. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County.

In 1943, Mr. Reed moved northeast of Washington and worked as a farm hand on the E. L. Stewart farm. In 1970, the couple moved to their own farm. Mr. Reed retired in 1982. He raised livestock and later mini-mules, showing them in parades and mule shows in Iowa and Minnesota. He also kept a large garden.

He was a member of the St. James Catholic Church, the Iowa Donkey and Mule Society, the American Donkey and Mule Society, the S. E. Iowa Equine Lovers, the Frontier Roundtable and several senior citizen organizations.

Mr. Reed is survived by his wife; three sons, Roger Reed and wife Connie, Nicholas Reed and wife Sue and David Reed, all of Washington; three daughters, Rosemary Reed of Des Moines, Bernice Marie Darby and husband Chuck of Ainsworth, and Melinda Lord and husband Bill of Cleveland, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Francis Reed of Washington and Hubert Reed of Omaha, Neb.; and one sister, Willus Greiner of Hiawatha.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mamie Wallace and Alice Bell.
