Nelle Ellen Brown

Nelle Ellen Brown, 86, of Iowa City, formerly of Washington, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, in her residence following complications from a stroke.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, in the Jones-Eden Funeral home in Washington with the Rev. Kitch Shatzer officiating. Interment will be in elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday in the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the United Presbyterian Church Library or to the Washington Public Library.

Mrs. Brown was born Jan. 27, 1922, in Washington, the daughter of Orin A. and Gertrude (Messenger) Wallace. She married Edsall D. Brown on July 12, 1942 in Washington.

She graduated from Washington High School and the University of Iowa with a degree in library science. She worked as director of the Washington Public Library for 14 ½ years before retiring in 1979. Following the death of her husband in 1979 she worked at the Washington Junior High Library. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Washington. She was a member of the PEO Chapter J, Conger House and Historical Society, served as a church librarian, and volunteered at Washington County Hospital’s gift shop.

Surviving are two sons, Tom E. Brown of Moab, Utah, and Jim Brown of Iowa City; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Mamie Walker; her husband; two sisters, Evelyn Bruty and Juanita Zieglowsky; and two brothers, Orin Wallace, Jr. and Stan E. Wallace.
