Charles Messenger Is Taken Here Today

Charles Messenger, 73, of 710 East Van Buren, died at 6 o’clock this morning. Mr. Messenger, a native of Henry county, had not been well for several years and seriously ill for the last month.

Funeral services have been tentatively set for two o’clock Monday afternoon, Sept. 19, in the Jones funeral home. Rev. W. J. Stevens will be in charge.

Mr. Messenger was born Sept. 16, 1876 in Henry county, the son of David and Mary Harvey Messenger. He was married June 25, 1901 in Washington to Phianna Hopkins. They lived in Brighton following their marriage and moved to Washington 23 years ago.

Mr. Messenger was a painter by trade. He was a member of the Christian Tabernacle.

Survivors include, his wife; five sons: Harold, David and Clarence of Washington; Emmett of Davenport and Otis of Ft. Madison; six daughters: Mrs. Christle Miller, Mrs. June Griffin, Mrs. Genevieve Garrett, Mrs. Wilma Martin and Mrs. Osie Arduser of Washington, Mrs. Ethel Walsh of Stockton, Calif. Also surviving are 32 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
