Laura E. Mason
(March 24, 1855 – February 4, 1940)

Chariton Herald Patriot, Chariton, Iowa, Thurs., Feb 8, 1940, p.7
Laura Mason
Miss Laura Mason was born in McLean County, Ill., March 24, 1855, and died at her home at 745 Osage Ave., at 10:30 a.m. February 4, 1940 in Chariton, Iowa, where she had lived with her sister, Mary Mason, since 1927. She had reached the age of 84 years, 10 months and 11 days. She was the daughter of Rev. Amos and Jensey Mason. The father was an ordained minister of the U. B. [United Brethren] Church and organized the first U.B. class in Lucas County, Iowa. Afterwards he entered the Civil War and belonged to the 34th Regiment of the State of Iowa and died during the war. Her father and mother and a brother and sister have gone before. Miss Mason was a faithful member of the U. B. Church here in Chariton, where she has served for years her church and her God. She had been confined to her home for years on account of affliction, but remained interested in the progress of the church and supported liberally to the best of her ability. She was almost a lifelong reader of her church paper, The Telescope, which she felt was such a blessing to her. She lived the simple life of faith in her home with her sister, Mary, and said to her pastor, while sitting up in bed, just a few days before she died, “I am perfectly satisfied.” She was loved and held in high esteem by all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her departure her sister, Mary Mason, Chariton, Iowa; and two brothers living near Newbern, Iowa, Charles Mason, the oldest with his wife, Mary; and Perry Mason and his wife, Emma; also several nieces and nephews and relatives and many friends to mourn her departure. But what is their loss is her infinite gain as she has passed on from her labor to her reward to be forever with her Lord. Funeral services, conducted by her pastor, Rev. F. H. Lathrop, of the United Brethren Church, were held at the Dunshee Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon, Feb 6, at 1:30 o’clock, and the body was laid to rest in the Newbern Cemetery to await the resurrection morn. “If we could see beyond today, as God can see, if all the clouds should roll away, the shadows flee, o’er present griefs, we would not fret. Each sorrow we would soon forget, for many joys are awaiting yet for you and me.”
