Ella R. Macumber
(April 18, 1876 – July 9, 1946)

Ella R. Macumber, daughter of J. M. and Mary Reynolds, was born at Carlisle April 18, 1876. At the age of 5 she moved with her parents to a farm in Madison County where she grew to young womanhood. She studied music at Simpson College and for many years taught that subject over a wide rural territory. Oct 9, 1901, she was united in marriage to W. E. Macumber of the Ord community southwest of Winterset. Most of their married life was spent on their farm in that community. They lived for a time near Lorimor, where Mr. Macumber was engaged in stock-buying. Here their two daughters, Mildred and Winifred, came to make a happy and devoted family circle. The Christian Union church at Ord has always been “home” to Mrs. Macumber, having become a member there in her young womanhood. Here she gave lavishly of her time and talents, one of her dearest memories being the time spent with her Sunday school class of children, “Buds of Promise.” She made the interests of the community her own, and worked always toward the advancement of the things that made for high ideals of Christian living. With this thought in mind, as well as her innate love for all children, she organized the Christian Home club in Indianola, and served as its first president. Another activity she enjoyed was her affiliation with the Pitzer chapter of the W. R. C. The family circle was broken when the husband and father was taken Nov. 7, 1935. Subsequently the mother and daughters moved to Indianola, where they made their home until her death July 9, 1946, having recently passed her 70th birthday. Besides the two daughters she is survived by a host of relatives and friends. One had to know Mrs. Macumber well to appreciate the depth of her nature, her deep, abiding devotion to the things she loved. Hers was a life of devotion, of affections deep and sincere that will live like a sweet benediction in the hearts of those lingering here. Her interests were many and varied. Home, children, music, and flowers, God’s great out-of-doors always called her – there she spent her happiest hours, but transcending all other interests, her love for her Master prevailed. The aim of her life to serve him and He knows her aim has never failed. Funeral services were held at the Ord church near Winterset Thursday, July 11. The Rev. J. Garbison, state president of the Christian Union churches in Iowa was in charge. He was assisted by the Rev. B. C. Mott, pastor of the Indianola Friends church, and the Rev. Floyd B. Jones, Tulsa, Okla., a former pastor of the Ord church.
Card of Thanks: We wish to extend our sincere appreciation to those who assisted us and extended their sympathy in so many beautiful ways during the illness and time of the death of our mother. – Mildred and Winifred Macumber.
