Joseph T. Labertew
(January 4, 1850 – January 19, 1924)

Josseph T. Labertew was born Jan 4, 1850, at Gasport, Ind., and departed this life, Jan 19, 1924, at his home near Milo, Iowa, at the age of 74 years and fifteen days. He came to Iowa at the age of one and one-half years. At the age of about 20 he made a public confession of Christ, but did not united with the church at that time, so has never become affiliated with any church organization. He was united in marriage to Rachel Lowder on Dec. 18, 1872. She died in June 1881. To this union was born one daughter, who died at the age of 12 years. Two years later, March 14, 1883, he was united in marriage to Sarah E. Pickering, of Indianola, Iowa. To this union was born five children; Mary L. Labertew, who still remains at home, Bennie O., who died in infancy, Pearl K. Clark, Frank S. Labertew and Bertha Trotter. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, Sarah, the living children noted above, one sister, Mrs. Mary Dyke, of Indianola, Iowa, and one brother, Sandy Labertew, also of Indianola, Iowa, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
Joseph Labertew was a man highly respected and honored by the entire community, a man who numbered his friends by his acquaintances, a quiet, unassuming gentleman, a real man. The wife and children have lost a loving husband and father, the community, state and nation, a friend, neighbor and citizen. The entire community unites in sympathy with the family in this their sad bereavement. The funeral sermon was preached by the Rev. George J. McClellan, pastor of the Christian Union Church of Milo, the funeral being held from the family residence near Milo, Monday, Jan. 21, at 1:30 p.m. Interment in the Indianola Cemetery.
