Samuel Shaw
(March 18, 1842 – March 1, 1923)

Samuel Shaw, son of Benjamin and Barbara Shaw, was born at Salem, Columbia County, Ohio, March 18, 1842, and died at his home in Milo, Iowa March 1, 1923, aged 80 years, 11 months and 20 days. On the 21st day of January, 1864, he was united in marriage with Emily Gilbert, and to this union four children were born; William A., Cora Edna, Nellie Constance and Reginald Arthur. He was preceded in death by his daughters. Samuel Shaw was an earnest Christian and zealous in all the work of the church. For many years his religious activities were centered in the Baptist Church, that is now known as Belmont Zion, which he was largely instrumental in organizing and building.
Upon moving to Milo, he and his wife united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and in its faith and practices he lived and died. He was an active member of the church of his choice, a faithful officer, in every capacity in which he served, and contributed liberally to the local church and to the missionary and educational interests of the church at large, as he deemed incumbent upon a faithful steward of the manifold bounties and richness of the goodness of God.
On account of the death of his father, early in life, he was called upon to assist in the support of his mother and a large family, and his early experiences were a fitting preparation to prepare him to help bear the burdens of others, in later life. Samuel Shaw heeded the call of his country, in her hour of darkest peril, and in May, 1864, enlisted in the volunteer service, under the colors of the 132nd Volunteer infantry of Ohio. He was a faithful member of the G. A. R. [Grand Army of the Republic] and for many years was the commander of Milo Post No. 275. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife and three sisters, his sons, William and Arthur; eleven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and numerous other relatives and a host of friends, for few knew him but to love him. An affectionate husband, a loving father, a kind neighbor, a faithful friend, a patriotic citizen, he is gone, and while our hearts were saddened by his passing we do not mourn, but rather rejoice, in his crowning. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal Church, Wednesday, March 21st, the Rev. Lucius L. Smith officiating, and being assisted by the Rev. A. F. Conrey and the Rev. J. M. Wiggins. The honorary pallbearers were Lewis Daughtrough, Adam Nelson and Nelse Jacobs. The interment was at Belmont Zion Cemetery.
