Mary Crosson Barnett
(May 12, 1848 – March 7, 1923)

Mrs. Mary Crosson Barnett was born May 12, 1848, in Eddyville, Iowa, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Allie O’Brien, of Beverly Hills, California, March 7, 1923. When a very small child, the oldest of six children, she moved with her parents to a farm west of Indianola. Here her mother was taken and Mary being the oldest was the one to perform the duties of mother for the two girls, Nancy and Belle, and the three boys, Ples, Jud and Mark. She was a good mother, working hard but happy doing for others, as she has all through her life. She joined the Methodist church at the age of thirteen and has always helped in church work. She was married to James Barnett, October 4, 1886. To them were born three children, Luella, Allie and LaMar. Luella died at the age of four, while Mrs. Allie O’Brien is living at Beverly Hills, Calif., and L. C. Barnett lives at Chestnut farm west of Indianola.
Mrs. Barnett was the widow of James Barnett, senator from Warren County to the state senate for two terms, 1888 to 1892. He was known as the first to import Percheron horses from abroad to his farm, known as Chestnut farm. Mrs. Barnett was always a help to her husband in every phase of life, through sickness and through health, helping everyone who came to her. Good and kind to the poor and needy. Besides her daughter and son Mrs. Barnett is survived by three grandchildren, James Webster, son of Mrs. O’Brien, James H. and George H. Barnett, sons of L. C. Barnett, and one great grandchild, daughter of James Webster, six nieces and nephews. [Copied from a scrapbook at the Warren County Historical Society Library, Indianola, Iowa]
