Alice Sheehey
1885-1923

This community has been saddened the past week by the death of two of our highly respected young women. Miss Alice Sheehey, passed away at her home Saturday morning. She had been sick about two weeks. Dr. Hooper of Indianola and a specialist from Des Moines were in attendance, also a trained nurse, but medical skill was of no avail. The sympathy of the neighborhood goes out to the bereaved family and especially to the mother to whom Alice was always such a comfort. Alice Sheehey
Unusual pathos of sadness has been cast over this community by the death of Alice Sheehey, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Sheehey, who died at the family home one mile east of Prole. She was stricken with a nervous breakdown and after an illness of two weeks, during which time all that medical aid and loving hands could do was done, but to no avail. She passed away March 24th, 1923. Her death has been a bitter cup of sorrow to relatives and friends. She was one of nature’s noble women in the truest sense, brave, generous and womanly. She leaves to mourn her loss a dear mother, two sisters and four brothers, Mrs. Chas. Smith of Cumming, Miss Catherine Sheehey of Des Moines, James, Edward and Leo of Prole, and Michael of Des Moines, and a host of relatives and friends. To the saddened family who sit in sorrow where her footsteps never again find echoes, gone from our sight but because life and love are stronger than death she is still ours and may she wield over us a strong force for goodness and truth than ever before. Her funeral occurred at the church of Assumption, Churchville, Monday, March 26th, 1923, Rev. P. J. Casey officiating. A glowing tribute was paid her by her beloved pastor which was truly merited by her, and the heart of those who heard it served as an example worthy of imitation. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Calvary cemetery. The work of her life well done, the fight with the world well won, we can almost hear as we murmer a prayer the echoing words, “Well done.”
