Essa Funk
(June 5, 1878 – March 13, 1923)

Mrs. Claude Funk
The community was shocked and saddened Wednesday morning when the news of the sudden death of Mrs. Claude Funk was received. The fact of her death was made more said by the serious sickness of her husband and son, Veryl, and her mother-in-law, Mrs. Carrie Funk, who were all seriously sick with the flu. Her brother and family, C. H. Oxenreider, and her sister, Mrs. Byron Fogle, were all suffering with the flu and were not able to attend the funeral which was held at the home of her sister, Mrs. Harvey Bliss Thursday afternoon.
Essa Oxenreider, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Oxenreider, was born June 5, 1878, and died March 13, 1923, aged forty-four years, nine months and eight days. She was united in marriage with Claude Funk, November 3, 1889, and to this union two sons were born, Herman H. and Veryl, who with the father mourn the loss of mother and companion. She also leaves her aged father, Samuel Oxenrider, and six sisters, Mrs. H. K. Bliss, Mrs. Lo Goode, Mrs. Bert Miller, and Mrs. Byron Fogle, of Lacona; Mrs. Karl Johnson of Milo, and Mrs. E. C. Mendenhall of Merrill, and one brother, C. H. Oxenrider, of Lacona, with a host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. The deceased was a faithful member of the Methodist church and the funeral was conducted by her pastor, Rev. Callahan, and interment in the Cochran cemetery. Much sympathy is express for the grief stricken family. [Copied from a scrapbook at the Warren County Historical Society Library, Indianola, Iowa]
